Wi-SUN Alliance, HomePlug form smart-grid pact

The Wi-SUN Alliance and the HomePlug Alliance have teamed up on the development of hybrid smart-grid networks that will support both wireless and powerline-wired connectivity.

The organizations say the collaboration will allow their members to share requirements and specifications for Media Access Control and transport layer profiles, facilitating interoperability between various IP-based smart-grid applications.

Phil Beecher, chairman of the Wi-SUN Alliance, heralded the deal as a “shining model of cooperation” for industry alliances and standards bodies.

The Wi-SUN Alliance and the HomePlug Alliance have teamed up on the development of hybrid smart-grid networks that will support both wireless and powerline-wired connectivity.

The organizations say the collaboration will allow their members to share requirements and specifications for Media Access Control and transport layer profiles, facilitating interoperability between various IP-based smart-grid applications.

Phil Beecher, chairman of the Wi-SUN Alliance, heralded the deal as a “shining model of cooperation” for industry alliances and standards bodies.

“Utilities and end customers stand to gain from it,” he said. “Working together to foster products and applications that are interoperable across both wireless and powerline-wired networks, Wi-SUN and HomePlug will pave the way for hybrid connectivity for utility networks.”

HomePlug said the tie-up would help the industry to create a more complete connectivity solution for utility customers.

“HomePlug’s Netricity certification program promotes the adoption of the new IEEE 1901.2 powerline communications standard, and is targeted for outside-the-home, smart grid networks,” added Rob Ranck, president of the HomePlug Alliance.

While HomePlug is promoting the IEEE 1901.2 standard, the Wi-SUN Alliance has thrown its weight behind the development of low-power products based on the IEEE 802.15.4g standard.

In late February, the organization flagged a similar tie-up with the OpenADR Alliance – another standards body – aimed at speeding up the development of energy-efficient program offerings.
