Verizon and Altair give boost to 4G M2M market

Mobile operator Verizon Wireless (New York, USA) has struck a deal that could fuel the adoption of M2M services using 4G LTE technology.

Marking what it describes as a “strategic milestone” for the company, Altair Semiconductor (Hod Hasharon, Israel) has revealed that its 4G chipsets have just been certified to run on Verizon’s LTE network.

Certification of the FourGee-3100/6200 chipset will be crucial for original equipment manufacturers in minimizing the time it takes for investments to start generating revenues.

Marking what it describes as a “strategic milestone” for the company, Altair Semiconductor (Hod Hasharon, Israel) has revealed that its 4G chipsets have just been certified to run on Verizon’s LTE network.

Certification of the FourGee-3100/6200 chipset will be crucial for original equipment manufacturers in minimizing the time it takes for investments to start generating revenues.

Importantly, it will also help M2M products based on 4G technology, including tablet devices and M2M applications, to gain a commercial footing.

“Completing this certification process with Verizon Wireless is a strategic milestone for Altair,” said Eran Eshed, co-founder and vice president of marketing for Altair Semiconductor, in a statement. “We are looking forward to helping develop the next wave of LTE solutions, including M2M, fixed and mobile broadband applications, on Verizon’s world-class wireless network.”

Although M2M services can run on basic 2G connections, vendors and operators are increasingly promoting the use of 3G and 4G technology for these applications. Some operators sound keen to shift all their traffic on to newer network technologies as soon as possible and close down their older systems to reduce costs.

Verizon’s certification process is designed to reduce the time to market and cost associated with the introduction of new M2M and 4G LTE devices.

Altair’s chipset supports both the FDD and TDD variants of LTE and covers all the frequency bands in the 700–2700MHz range.

Altair also claims that it consumes a fraction of the power of traditional communications cores.
