u-blox launches “precision timing” module for industrial data systems

Switzerland’s M2M player u-blox has launched a new module that uses “precision timing” technology to provide synchronization for industrial data and communications systems, including small, femto and macro-cell mobile networks.

The module is capable of tracking all of the GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou satellites in service and includes technology that allows it to operate in structures “with limited sky-view”.

The module is capable of tracking all of the GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou satellites in service and includes technology that allows it to operate in structures “with limited sky-view”.

“A reliable and cost-effective precision reference clock is a crucial component used in many systems in the critical infrastructure and key resource sectors (CIKR),” said Thomas Nigg, u-blox’s (Thalwil, Switzerland) vice president of product marketing.

“Our LEA-M8F GPS/GNSS satellite-disciplined timing module enables the proper operation of many mission-critical infrastructure systems including mobile and fixed-line communication networks, power generation and distribution systems, gas and chemical processing plants, banking, postal and goods distribution processes,” he added.

u-blox says the modules meet “master reference requirements” for LTE small cells and are suitable for TD-LTE, LTE-Advanced and other applications requiring extended hold-over times when integrated with small cell platforms.

The company indicates that LEA-M8F can track signals from satellites from any two constellations simultaneously and that compatibility with multiple GNSS systems gives it access to a large number of satellites, allowing synchronization even in urban or indoor settings with limited sky view.
