TomTom LIVE subscribers doubled in 2011

At the end of the year 1.5 million people around the globe were actively using TomTom’s LIVE Services, including TomTom HD Traffic, compared to 690,000 at the start of the year.

Currently, over 90% of TomTom’s (Amsterdam, Netherlands) automotive systems and 20% of its Portable Navigation Devices sold in Europe are equipped with LIVE Services.

Laird Technologies releases new M2M wireless gateway

Laird Technologies, Inc., a supplier of customized electronics and wireless products, last week announced the release of its new APG BT W400 wireless access point gateway. The new gateway is used for M2M wireless communications and for connecting Bluetooth enabled devices in a Personal Area Network to IP network via Ethernet or WLAN interface.

Orbcomm prepares to launch second AIS satellite

ORBCOMM Inc., a satellite data communications company focused on two-way Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, last week announced that the target launch date for its second satellite is January 10, 2012. LuxSpace Sarl, an affiliate of OHB System AG, confirmed that construction and testing of the VesselSat2 AIS satellite has been successfully completed.

The spacecraft has been shipped to the China Great Wall Industry Corporation’s Tiayuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC) in the Ganso Province of the People’s Republic of China for its launch.

Telit Wireless to acquire Navman Wireless OEM Solutions

Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the U.S.-based mobile technology arm of Telit Communications (Trieste, Italy), a machine-to-machine (M2M) technology company, has entered into an agreement to purchase Navman Wireless OEM Solutions, a designer and manufacturer of Global Positioning System (GPS) modules, for $3 million in cash.

Mobile payments still years away from widespread adoption

A study released on Wednesday by KPMG, a professional services network, found only 23% of consumers were willing to use mobile payments in place of other forms of payment, with 30% of younger adults much more willing to do so. One major obstacle to universal adoption of mobile payments is doubt among consumers and some companies that paying with one's smart phone is secure and easier than using a credit or debit card or cash.
