Telematics fleet management applications hitting the road

Truck manufacturers are deploying more telematics technology for fleet management, as shown by announcements within the past week from Hino Trucks, Freightliner Trucks, and Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA).

Hino Trucks, a Toyota Group company, today announced Hino Insight, a web-based location and telematics product. Hino Insight provides GPS-based remote fleet management capabilities to fleet operations of all sizes.

Ultimate Solutions, Cypherbridge distribution deal addresses security for 'internet of things'

Securing communications in embedded systems has become increasingly important as the "internet of things" takes off. Cypherbridge Systems, a technology R&D firm, announced a partnering agreement with embedded tools provider Ultimate Solutions. Under this agreement, Ultimate Solutions will now be distributing Cypherbridge's Embedded Security and Device Management solutions in North America.



Verizon unveils hybrid and alternative-energy vehicles

Verizon today showcased some of the newest energy-efficient additions to its motor vehicle fleet at an event attended by President Barack Obama. Verizon, which has the third-largest corporate vehicle fleet in the nation, was among five companies recognized by the president for adding substantive numbers of green vehicles.

Verizon displayed three of its latest energy-efficient vehicles at the event, which featured alternative-energy trucks and cars operated by some of the nation's largest corporations. 

LightSquared 4G service stalled by federal GPS interference concerns

Concerns about potential GPS interference continue to haunt LightSquared Wireless, the Wall Street Journal reported today. In the latest news, the Defense Department and federal transportation officials have expressed concerns that LightSquared mobile broadband service, which operates on frequencies originally intended for satellite phones, could potentially interfere with military GPS devices, because LightSquared is proposing to operate on spectrum frequencies very close to those used by GPS services.

Airbiquity to provide connected vehicle consumer device with OnStar

Airbiquity, a provider of wireless connected vehicle services, last week at CTIA Wireless in Orlando, Florida, announced the company's selection to provide data-over-voice technology to OnStar's retail product, OnStar FMV. OnStar's mirror-mounted retail device will bring connected vehicle services to virtually any vehicle.

Telit introduces HSPA+ LGA module for industrial and consumer M2M applications

Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., a specialist in machine-to-machine (M2M) technology, announced the launch of HE910, the worldwide smallest module featuring 5-band HSPA+ Tuesday at CTIA Wireless in Orlando, Florida,. The module is designed to be used in any 3G network worldwide without the need for regional variants. The small footprint Land-Grid-Array (LGA) form factor is suitable for compact devices, e.g. e-readers or PDAs, with data-rich applications like multimedia.

Connected Vehicle panel discusses telematics present and future at CTIA

A panel of key connected vehicle players met Wednesday during M2M Zone's exclusive conference at International CTIA Wireless in Orlando, Florida. Telematics, location-based services and the mobile web featured prominently in discussions between panelists Janet Schijns, VP Business Solutions Group at Verizon, Mike Ueland, Vice President and General Manager at Telit Wireless Solutions, and Alex Brisbourne, President of KORE Telematics. Moderator Sam Lucero, an M2M Connectivity analyst at ABI research, focused the discussion on societal and business benefits of connected vehicles, and the logistics of deployment and consumer adoption.

Ayantra integrates Cinterion's BG2 M2M module into new asset management solution

Cinterion and Ayantra yesterday announced together at CTIA Wireless in Orlando, Florida, the launch of FleetWare, a remote monitoring solution for tracking assets that do not have a power source. Cinterion, a Gemalto company, provides cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communication modules. Ayantra provides remote asset management solutions.

nPhase launches developer program; opens new M2M markets

nPhase, which this week showcased example partner capabilities with Axeda Corporation Sierra Wireless and CalAmp, provided more details on their nPhase ONE developer program at CTIA Wireless 2011. A Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm Incorporated joint venture, nPhase last week announced a new machine-to-machine (M2M) developer program, called nPhase ONE, that will provide a single M2M application development platform with comprehensive support and advanced M2M capabilities engineered for deployment on Verizon Wireless and Vodafone mobile networks.

Sprint expands M2M partner ecosystem

Sprint announced Monday at CTIA in Orlando, Florida, expanded M2M solutions provided by 14 Sprint partners. These partner offerings bring additional specialized capabilities to Sprint’s broad-based M2M portfolio, including the fast-growing segments of connected transportation, fixed and portable solutions, SmartGrid and utilities, and health care.
