Ericsson to acquire Telcordia

Ericsson (Stockholm, Sweden), a vendor of telecommunications technology and service, Tuesday announced that it has reached an agreement with Providence Equity Partners, LLC and Warburg Pincus to acquire 100 % of the shares of Telcordia (Piscataway, N.J.), a company that develops mobile, broadband and enterprise communications software and services, for $1.15 billion. Closing is anticipated in Q4 2011 with full effect in Q1 2012.

This will be Ericsson’s second major acquisition in recent months, having just recently acquired the M2M service platform of Telenor Connexion in April.

Vehicles as smart mobile devices

Building adaptive ecosystems of connected things

Any picture of a "true connected car system" that works seamlessly is, by definition, incomplete. Much as a computer can accommodate a programmer's chosen software language and development process, so connected vehicles must be designed to adapt to changing consumer desire and incorporate their content, applications and services. An initial challenge is to consider the connected vehicle as a platform for content and service delivery, rather than a branded expression of content or application determinism.

Toyota cars to be "friends" with driver

Toyota Motor Corp (Japan) and cloud computing company Salesforce.com Inc (San Francisco, CA) will build a social network service that will enable owners to become "friends" with their cars and get friendly, tweet-like reminders for maintenance checks and other notices.

The deal marks the second tie-up between the world's biggest automaker and a software company in as many months. Toyota and Microsoft Corp last month announced plans to bring Internet-connected services to Toyota's cars across the world.

Deutsche Telekom and iPass launch global WiFi services exchange

Deutsche Telekom and iPass Inc. last week announced their partnership to create WiFi Mobilize, a new network services exchange for in-country and international roaming services. The exchange is designed to help carriers meet the accelerating demand from their customers for data services on smartphone and tablet devices, and to optimize their network investments. The partnership will provide a solution for new data offload, international roaming, and inter-standard traffic management services for GSM, CDMA and WiFi operators.

AT&T plans wireless security service for 2012

Reuters

AT&T Inc plans to launch a wireless security srvice for consumers next year to help combat a big rise in cyber attacks on mobile devices, a top executive said.

As more people use smartphones like Apple Inc's iPhone and Google Inc's Android-based devices to download Web applications, John Stankey, the head of AT&T's enterprise business, said he had seen a big spike in security attacks on cellphones.

"Hackers always go to where there's a base of people to attack," Stankey said in an interview ahead of the Reuters Technology Media and Telecommunications Summit.
