Report: smart appliance shipments to exceed 24 million units by 2017

According to a recent report by research firm ABI Research, smart applications shipments will soon begin to pick up and will eventually exceed 24 million units by 2017.  Similar to the market for home energy management systems (HEMS), the smart appliances market has, so far, failed to take off as many had expected. Many products are still involved in small pilots and have failed to hit retail outlets in any large number, says ABI Research.

Cinterion M2M module used in Chinese smart meters

Cinterion, a provider of cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communication modules, announced on Tuesday that Linyang Electronics, an electronic information enterprise in the smart meter market, is integrating Cinterion's tiny BGS2 in their smart metering products and power utilization management terminals.

Sprint partners with Orange Business Services to extend M2M reach

On Tuesday, Sprint announced that it is partnering with Orange Business Services to provide global machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity outside the U.S.  Through the agreement, Sprint will expand its M2M reach to include Sprint-branded global M2M connectivity to 180 countries on Orange’s network.

Swisscom and Ericsson launch M2M partnership

Switzerland’s largest telecom operator Swisscom and telecom equipment maker Ericsson have launched a machine-to-machine (M2M) partnership.  Under the agreement, Swisscom will offer customers M2M services using Ericsson’s Device Connection Platform.


The first trials will start in February 2012, with the commercial introduction of services scheduled for the summer 2012, says Swisscom.  The partnership will span across Switzerland as well as abroad.

TomTom enters insurance market with new partnership

On Wednesday, TomTom, which makes vehicle-based personal navigation devices (PNDs), said it had teamed up with UK-based insurance firm Motaquote to offer its first new insurance product, called Fair Play, which gives safer drivers lower premiums.


"Our entry in the insurance market…puts us at the forefront of a move that could help to revolutionize the motor insurance industry," said Thomas Schmidt, managing director TomTom (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Business Solutions.

Siemens, TIBCO provide smart grid integration to Con Edison

Siemens Smart Grid Division and TIBCO Software Inc. will provide smart grid enterprise integration services to Consolidated Edison (Con Edison), a utility company that provides electric, gas and steam service to more than three million customers in New York City and Westchester County, for a smart grid demonstration project.
