Scandinavia’s TeliaSonera has named Johan Dennelind as its new chief executive, saying the current Vodacom executive will take up his new position on September 1.

Scandinavia’s TeliaSonera has named Johan Dennelind as its new chief executive, saying the current Vodacom executive will take up his new position on September 1.

Dennelind is currently employed as chief executive of South Africa’s Vodacom International (Johannesburg) but has worked in a number of roles in the telecoms industry throughout a 20-year career.

Before taking the reins at Vodacom International in December 2010, he worked as chief financial officer of Telenor Sweden (Stockholm) and chief executive of Telenor’s Malaysian subsidiary Digi Telecommunications (Shah Alam).

Dennelind will take over from Per-Arne Blomquist, who has been acting chief executive since February, when Lars Nyberg was forced to quit the leadership position following allegations of misconduct regarding TeliaSonera’s acquisition of a spectrum license in Uzbekistan in 2007.

Blomquist will return to his former role as executive vice president and chief financial officer when Dennelind takes over.

“I am delighted that Johan Dennelind will be joining TeliaSonera,” said Marie Ehrling, TeliaSonera’s Chair. “[He] brings with him almost 20 years of experience from the telecoms industry and has during his time at Telenor and most recently at Vodacom proven that he can successfully lead organizations in significant change processes within an international environment.”

Although Dennelind is not due to begin his new role until September 1, TeliaSonera (Stockholm, Sweden) said he “will be available for the company from July 1”.

“TeliaSonera is today one of Europe’s leading telecoms operators with a large international presence and I look forward to leading the company during the next phase of development,” said Dennelind.
