Telefonica ramps up offering with Smart M2M

Spanish operator Telefonica is aiming to play a bigger role in the fast-growing M2M market with the launch of a new web-based platform for the connection, management and control of services.

Telefonica (Madrid, Spain) says the platform includes advanced features such as real-time monitoring of traffic type, volume and current consumption, as well as fraud-detection functionalities, allowing communications to be restricted to a list of given devices.

The platform was developed entirely in-house, giving Telefonica the flexibility to add additional functionality to meet customer needs.

Smart M2M is already commercially available in Brazil and Spain and Telefonica plans to introduce it in China, Argentina and the Czech Republic soon.

The operator claims that Smart M2M can be tailored to suit global and local needs, offering local language support and a locally maintained network to clients.

That means local SIM cards can be used, allowing data usage to be restricted appropriately and ensuring compliance with local regulations.

“By matching our technical expertise and experience in M2M with our local knowledge, we have been able to develop a simple and flexible platform that can give our customers a complete and precise view of their business processes,” said Carlos Morales, director of M2M and cloud at Telefonica Digital.

The launch of Smart M2M comes amid an intensification of competition between companies from different parts of the M2M value chain.

Telit (Rome, Italy), an M2M module maker, struck an MVNO deal with Telefonica last year and has been providing value-added services under its m2mAIR proposition.

Various analysts, however, expect network operators to become more purposeful this year as device shipments grow and costs decline.

In January, analyst firm Yankee Group predicted that MVNOs would “feel the squeeze” from network operators in 2013, with M2M cellular connections growing by 22% since 2012.
