Tele2 launches global M2M business

Sweden-based Tele2 has announced its launch of a global M2M business, saying its aim is to become a competitive player in the international market.

The operator provided few details about the focus and features of its M2M offering but said it planned to concentrate on the markets of Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands in the first instance.

However, the operator was quick to point out that Tele2 (Stockholm, Sweden) M2M Global Solutions – as it brands the new business – is already able to serve customers globally.

The operator provided few details about the focus and features of its M2M offering but said it planned to concentrate on the markets of Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands in the first instance.

However, the operator was quick to point out that Tele2 (Stockholm, Sweden) M2M Global Solutions – as it brands the new business – is already able to serve customers globally.

In a statement published on its website, Tele2 said it had been investing in personnel and IT systems in the M2M area, and that its advanced technical platform, dedicated M2M support function and skilled team would allow it to provide a “simple, flexible and customer-oriented” M2M alternative.

True to its reputation, the operator also plans to compete heavily on pricing.

“The potential of M2M is great and we believe that now is the time to make a dedicated move,” said Mats Granryd, Tele2’s chief executive. “The market is ready for a broad roll-out, as more and more companies see how they can connect IT and communication services with their business processes – with cost savings and new revenue streams as a result.”

Granryd noted that it was important to provide a “global” offering given the nature of the M2M business.

“Even if we will have our M2M customer base in parts of the Tele2 footprint, the M2M business is global in its nature,” he said. “Our customers’ activities are increasingly international in character – almost regardless of size. Hence, it is natural for us to offer them our services wherever they go.”

Tele2 claims to be one of Europe’s fastest-growing operators, serving more than 15 million customers in ten countries.

The company offers a range of mobile, broadband, telephony and cable TV services and describes itself as a “tough challenger to the former government monopolies and other established providers”.

Last year, it reported revenues of SEK31 billion ($4.7 billion) and an operating profit of SEK6 billion.
