Verdantix calls Orange the most ecologically sustainable telco

Also praises British Telecom, AT&T

According to the 2010 "Green Quadrant" report published by Verdantix, an independent analyst firm that provides commercial analysis of climate change, sustainability and energy issues, Orange "stands out as the telecoms operator that has been most successful in creating, marketing and delivering telecoms solutions which offer sustainability benefits to business customers." Orange already led the market in the 2009 issue of the Verdantix report.

According to David Metcalfe, Verdantix director, “Over the last 12 months, stronger organizational capabilities focused on sustainability have enabled Orange to make significant strides in implementing its sustainable business strategy. This positions Orange to succeed in winning new sustainable telecoms contracts as more and more business customers seek suppliers with top quality sustainability credentials.”

Verdantix compared 17 telecoms operators with significant European operations on 31 criteria using its proprietary Green Quadrant methodology. As part of its research, Verdantix conducted in-depth interviews with a focus group of 15 senior telecoms and IT buyers who also have responsibility for sustainability. Those buyers represented a wide segment of "one billion plus" revenue companies, including those in financial sectors, and food and beverage organizations. Research was conducted across multiple management tiers, from VP-level up to C-level.

Orange was recognized for maintaining its overall leadership position on customer sustainability propositions and for closing the gap on market momentum. Verdantix found that Orange’s internal sustainability performance satisfies customers’ environmental procurement criteria that is now a standard requirement across the market.

British Telecom and AT&T were also praised. Analysis was divided into two major sections: sustainable external customer offerings, and sustainable internal strategy. Orange was actually second to BT in the latter division. Verdantix also noted major improvements by AT&T, who ranked third place overall for their European and global divisions. This followed poor performance by AT&T in last year's issue.

According to Antonin Shanahan, lead analyst on the report, telepresence has developed into a key money-saver for telcos. Shanahan also cites dramatic shifts toward M2M "smart" applications as highly influential to their "Green Quadrant" performance.
