Sprint and M2M DataSmart make play for SMB customers

US operator Sprint is working with MVNO M2M DataSmart on an initiative to attract more small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to the M2M marketplace.

The two companies, which struck a wholesale agreement in September last year, say they are promoting more “open access” of data and network services so that entrepreneurial start-ups – as well as traditional OEM companies – can more easily commercialize their M2M concepts.

The two companies, which struck a wholesale agreement in September last year, say they are promoting more “open access” of data and network services so that entrepreneurial start-ups – as well as traditional OEM companies – can more easily commercialize their M2M concepts.

Claiming to have already certified hundreds of M2M solutions, with millions of active embedded devices running on its CDMA network, Sprint (Overland Park, KS, USA) believes the M2M DataSmart (Del Mar, CA, USA) service enablement solution will attract new developers to its community, and help to align them with consumer electronics and emerging business markets.

“At Sprint, we continue to focus on growing the M2M market as a leader in the space,” said Wayne Ward, Sprint’s vice-president of emerging solutions.

“With our commitment to offer a comprehensive network portfolio of 2G, 3G and 4G solutions for M2M, we are enabling innovation and growth through our collaboration with M2M DataSmart, and we are committed to making M2M development and deployment easier, faster and more cost effective for tomorrow’s MVNO today on Sprint,” he said.

M2M DataSmart says it can help commercial customers with the launch of M2M data-centric applications through its data enablement service platform and portfolio of network services.

“The average M2M applications company is an experienced provider in the technology required to field their application but when developing solutions with an embedded CDMA radio … that’s a horse of another color – but it’s where we can help,” said Marc Adams, M2M DataSmart’s vice-president.

“We support our customers’ timeliness in getting to market quickly by providing developer accounts, enhanced network access, applications engineering and the most affordable airtime offered to the market … and that’s just side ‘A’,” he said.

The references to the use of CDMA network technology are interesting in light of Sprint’s recent deal with module maker u-blox (Thalwil, Switzerland), apparently aimed at luring AT&T’s GSM customers over to its CDMA-based alternative.

Clearly, Sprint is making a play for AT&T (Dallas, TX, USA) customers worried about the looming shutdown of GSM networks.

Meanwhile, Kore Telematics (Atlanta, GA, USA), another MVNO, has championed CDMA over GSM when it comes to M2M services.

“We’ve brought in new commercial models with Verizon that drive a coach and horses through the old economics of CDMA,” said Alex Brisbourne, the president of Kore Telematics, in a recent interview with M2M Zone. “The CDMA network is not only reliable but cost-efficient, with carriage costs per megabyte that are probably 60% of the cost of GSM.”

Sprint and M2M DataSmart expect the global M2M market to grow at a compound annual rate of more than 25% between 2013 and 2016 as a growing number of industries adopt M2M services.
