Siemens launches ‘surgical’ demand response system for utilities

Siemens Smart Grid has introduced an updated version of its demand response system, claiming it allows utilities to manage demand response programs more effectively than via traditional processes.

The so-called Demand Response Management System (DRMS) Version 2.0 is supposedly one of the first technologies that can ‘surgically’ target demand reductions through substation, feeder, zip code or geographical location. This means that utilities can reduce power loads at critical sections of their distribution network.

The so-called Demand Response Management System (DRMS) Version 2.0 is supposedly one of the first technologies that can ‘surgically’ target demand reductions through substation, feeder, zip code or geographical location. This means that utilities can reduce power loads at critical sections of their distribution network.

“This is one of the first demand response systems that can surgically pinpoint a load overage or outage event, making it easier for utilities to distribute reliable power while reducing lifecycle costs at their facilities,” said Thierry Godart, president of the Siemens Smart Grid division in the US. “Siemens is proud to offer a technology solution that will help ensure utilities have more efficient and dependable systems for targeted, real-time demand event monitoring while modernizing the grid to meet the country’s growing electricity needs.”

DRMS 2.0 is intended to manage all aspects of demand response. Siemens (Munich, Germany) says it can help utilities to reduce maintenance and lifecycle costs and opens up new revenue-generating opportunities.

The product was released on October 1 and Siemens is planning to host a webinar on November 7 demonstrating how it works.
