KORE has connected over 500 pre-approved M2M devices

Extensive library enable faster rollout for new applications

KORE Telematics today announced that more than 500 unique, pre-approved M2M devices are now enabled on its network. According to KORE, with a large pool of devices at their disposal, application service provider (ASP) partners are able to bring innovative M2M applications to market more quickly than ever.

According to Alex Brisbourne, president and COO, KORE Telematics, their device library can be divided into three main groups: "basic" devices like those found at the board or chipset level, "general communication" devices which are designed for rugged industrial use, and "designed for purpose" devices which are custom-built depending on their intended application. It is this third classification into which most of KORE's devices fall, and range from 20lb. ocean liner GPS systems to transceivers the size of a pebble, used by private investigators and even the U.S. government for surveillance and tracking.

But the real news here is the wider market implication. By offering such a library of pre-approved devices, KORE can accelerate an emerging product's certification and approval time. According to Brisbourne, by the time regulatory bodies and then carriers approve a device, 8-12 weeks have passed. KORE's pool can reduce this figure to 4-6 weeks.

By providing extensive device and network options, KORE claims its partners may choose the specific device that meets the exacting requirements of any M2M application. For instance, devices can be matched to selection criteria such as network support (GSM or CDMA), physical size, weight, battery life, cost and a number of additional performance characteristics.

In the past 12 months, KORE has added support for 63 new devices, including those in vertical industries such as telehealth, payment processing and utilities. In 2009, more than 20 percent of the company’s net device additions came from health-related applications. KORE monitors can track the breathing of sleep apnea patients for example, while embedded accelerometers measure their tossing and turning.

KORE supports 341 GSM devices across 95 vendors, including Cinterion, Sierra Wireless, Enfora and Telit, as well as 197 CDMA devices from 42 vendors, including Sierra Wireless, BlueTree, Calamp and Novatel. This includes nine devices in the telehealth market, 14 devices in the payment processing market and 15 devices in the utilities industry.
