Schindler Elevators has revealed it is using M2M technology from Swisscom to support maintenance and emergency call management in Switzerland.

“With M2M we can monitor emergency calls as well as data traffic in real time, and offer customers a one-stop solution for everything from commissioning to elevator maintenance”, says Martin Huonder, the head of product management modernization at Schindler Elevators (Ebikon, Switzerland), which claims that a billion people worldwide use its elevators on a daily basis.

The company says it is naturally concerned with maintaining the highest standards of safety and providing the most comprehensive services, and in Switzerland looked to the country’s biggest operator to provide an emergency call and telemonitoring system based on M2M technology.

The technology works by incorporating SIM cards into elevator systems, allowing status information to be sent to a central connectivity management platform at regular intervals – as well as on demand.

Schindler says that thanks to the use of the M2M service it is better able to monitor elevator emergencies as well as identify faults in real time and take appropriate action.

Before using Swisscom (Bern, Switzerland), the company had relied on fixed-line connections for emergency calls and telemonitoring, but it said this usually entailed high costs for installing retrofits and upgrades.

It says this is not the case with Swisscom’s GSM network, which also meets its requirements for of availability and security.

Previously, building owners had needed to order fixed-line connections for the elevator emergency call device, but elevators equipped with M2M are ready for service immediately after installation, says Schindler.

Besides giving Schindler a status overview of every elevator system, the system allows it to better monitor and plan for communication costs.
