The European Smart Metering Industry Group (ESMIG), representing the leading companies in the area of smart metering, welcomed the European Commission's Communication on Smart Grids, but says that efforts in the area of smart grids have to be expedited if the EU is going to meet its 20-20-20 goals.

Cybit and Masternaut merge, create unified European telematics company

Cybit and Masternaut, both European telematics companies providing vehicle tracking, fleet and driver management solutions, Monday announced that they have combined to form a single, pan-European telematics company. The new organization, which retains the Masternaut name, will have more than 500 employees supporting a 10,000-strong customer base across 32 countries.

French energy group GDF Suez has signed a six-year deal with Orange Business Services for the management of its information system. The partnership includes standard facilities management such as hosting, infrastructure operation and running ERP applications. The partnership will also establish a shared engineering team in charge of developing the Group’s solutions to match the needs of its business units as closely as possible.

CeBIT 2011: Deutsche Telekom outlines fiber-to-the-home and LTE plans

10 German cities will be connected this year

Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Germany) discussed rollout plans for both its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and wireless LTE network expansions in a press conference today at CeBIT. As many as 160,000 households in 10 German cities will connect via FTTH this year.

The company claims download speeds in excess of 1 Gbps and upload speeds of 500 Mbps will be available.

Certain districts within Braunschweig, Brühl, Hanover, Hennigsdorf, Neu-Isenburg, Kornwestheim, Mettmann, Offenburg, Potsdam, and Rastatt will get FTTH in 2011.
