Huawei targets enterprise deals at $7 billion by 2012

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (Shenzhen, P.R.C.), the world's second largest network equipment maker, expects its deals in the enterprise sector to total more than $7 billion by next year, banking on demand from key markets such as China, a senior executive said.

Huawei also plans to triple staff numbers at its enterprise unit to about 30,000 in the next three years from 10,000 expected by the end of this year, to compete with the likes of Cisco Systems Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co, with half in research and development.

Alcatel-Lucent, Telefonica announce 4G mobile broadband program in Spain

On Wednesday, equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent (Paris, France) and telecom operator Telefónica (Madrid, Spain) announced an initiative to deliver 4G mobile broadband services in Europe with the deployment of LTE technology that will enable the launch of the first 4G wireless network in Spain.

US, Europe collaborating on smart grid standards development

On Tuesday, the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the European Union's (EU) Smart Grid Coordination Group (SG-CG) jointly announced their intention to work together on smart grid standards development, emphasizing common goals and areas of focus.

Telekom Austria sets up M2M subsidiary company

The Telekom Austria Group (Vienna Austria), a telecom provider, on Tuesday announced that it has set up a new subsidiary in the M2M business field. The new company, the Telekom Austria Group M2M GmbH, acts as the competence and service center of the Telekom Austria Group, focusing solely on the development and marketing of M2M services, according to the company.

Verizon Wireless will not pay annual dividend to Vodafone

Verizon Communications (New York) has dashed the hopes of Vodafone (London, England) investors by ruling out a return to a recurring dividend from the two companies' mobile phone joint venture, called Verizon Wireless, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

Vodafone launches R&D Center in Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley is home to some of the most powerful technology companies in the world.  Microsoft, Google, Apple, Intel, Sony, IBM and Oracle all headquarter in and around the Silicon Valley, and many of those companies started and built their company there.  With so many technology companies headquartered in the area, it makes sense that Vodafone (London, England) decided to launch a Research and Development (R&D) Center in that same location.

TIM Brazil says Telecom Italia not selling stake

TIM Participacoes (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Brazil's second-largest wireless phone company, said on Tuesday its controlling shareholder Telecom Italia has no plans to sell part of its stake in the Brazilian company.

The statement from TIM Participacoes came in a securities filing responding to a report by newspaper Valor Economico that Telecom Italia (Rome, Italy) was preparing to sell some of its 67% stake in the local company, calling TIM Brazil, while retaining control.

French court rejects call to stop wireless auction

France's highest administrative court rejected a bid by telecom operator Iliad (Paris, France) to block the government's auction of fourth-generation mobile licenses.  Broadband provider Iliad had petitioned France's Conseil d'Etat for an emergency injunction to suspend the auction, set to begin on September 15, saying it was not fair to all telecom operators.
