Chinese telecom equipment makers have their sights set on the United States, a massive market that has so far been largely off limits to them because of fears over the security of key national infrastructure.

Huawei (Shenzhen, China), the world's number three seller of network gear, and ZTE (Shenzhen), number five, both told Reuters in interviews at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that they wanted to crack the United States.

SPIRIT DSP extends relationship with Huawei

SPIRIT DSP (Moscow), a voice and video over IP provider, has announced that Huawei Technologies (Shenzhen, China), the world's second-largest telecommunications equipment provider, has extended its license with SPIRIT DSP for HD voice and video to carriers.

Under terms of the agreement, Huawei, a SPIRIT customer since 2007, will use SPIRIT's TeamSpirit Voice&Video Engine PC in its IP Multimedia Subsystem, Unified Communications, and Fixed Mobile Convergence solutions to carriers from the Huawei core network, delivering a PC video softphone to Huawei's carrier customers.

KT to become top owner of BC Card, bets on mobile payment

KT Corp, South Korea's No.2 mobile carrier, said on Thursday that it plans to become the top shareholder of credit card processing firm BC Card, betting on mobile payment services to generate new revenue.

KT (Seoul) said in a statement that its board had approved its planned purchase of a combined 33.85 percent stake in BC Card from Woori Bank and Shinhan Card.

The Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested former Telecoms Minister Andimuthu Raja over a massive graft scam, officials said, a huge blow for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and efforts to pass bills in the parliamentary budget session. Raja belongs to a parliamentary ally of the ruling Congress party and his arrest may spark tension between coalition partners and galvanise an opposition that has blocked parliament since November to protest the scandal over mobile phone licences.

The report tracks two market segments: Transport, which includes microwave transmission and optical transport equipment, and Routers and Switches, which includes cell site devices, carrier Ethernet switches, and service provider edge routers used for IP-based mobile backhaul.

SK Telecom announces specifics for the first South Korean LTE network

Samsung, LG-Ericsson and Nokia Siemens will provide equipment

SK Telecom (Seoul, South Korea) has announced technical specifications for its upcoming 4G LTE network, the first in South Korea. The company will begin providing commercial LTE services in Seoul by July this year and plans to expand the service to the Seoul metropolitan area and six other metropolitan cities by 2012. The service will become nationwide by 2013.
