South Korea police probe Google over location data collection

Google Inc.'s Seoul office was raided on Tuesday on suspicion its mobile advertising unit AdMob had illegally collected location data without consent, South Korean police said, the latest setback to the Internet search firm's Korean operations.

The probe into suspected collection of data on where a user is located without consent highlights growing concerns about possible misuse of private information as the use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets increases.

South Korea's KT launches nationwide WiMax network

KT, South Korea's No.2 mobile operator, said on Wednesday that it had rolled out a nationwide high-speed WiMax service to help meet surging data demand from smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

The move comes as KT, which is also the country' top fixed-line carrier, seeks to further sharpen its competitive edge to counter threats from bigger rival SK Telecom, which will join KT in offering Apple Inc.'s iPhone.

Korea Electric Power Corp. to build smart grid

$1.8 billion investment by 2015

Korea Electric Power Corp. (Seoul), South Korea's number 1 electricity producer, has announced it plans to invest $1.8 billion (2 trillion won) over the next five years in a smart grid. The project is part of a larger government initiative to reduce carbon emission. The South Korean government has previously mentioned that state and private spending on smart grid infrastructure could reach nearly $21 billion by 2030.

Hyundai Motor Group (Seoul, South Korea) has signed an agreement with Vodafone Global Enterprise, the business within Vodafone (London) which manages the communications needs of its largest customers, to explore business opportunities in telematics services in Europe. The initial agreement, which was signed last week, is designed to boost Hyundai’s competitiveness in vehicle IT systems and reach out to a wider customer base in Europe.
