Telit has announced it will supply modules to Digicom, a network-technology specialist, in a deal designed to strengthen the M2M player’s presence in the burgeoning smart-metering industry.
The modules are to be integrated with Digicom’s (Cardano al Campo, Italy) TLOG system – a meter-reading device for the gas, LPG and water industries.
TLOG measures consumption pulses from meters and sends the data via SMS or GSM/GPRS, TCP/IP technology.
Telit (Rome, Italy) is to provide gateway functionality through its GE864-QUAD ATEX, the “extra-rugged” member of the GE864 product family.
The company says this module was required because of the potentially explosive environments in which Digicom’s products operate.
Telit claims the use of the GE864-QUAD ATEX will reduce consumption by 20% and allow more accurate billing from real-time consumption information and significant cost savings in the area of maintenance personnel.
It says that “smart” control of consumption is especially important when considering the criticality of avoiding water waste.
“The smart metering sector is one of our core strategic markets from where we are seeing very high demand for M2M solutions,” said Dominikus Hierl, the chief marketing officer at Telit Wireless Solutions. “We are delighted that, with our GE864-QUAD ATEX module, we are able to make an important contribution to help solution providers such as Digicom create and manage their M2M applications reducing total cost of ownership while ensuring the highest quality and reliability.”
