Telekom Austria (Vienna, Austria) chief executive Hannes Ametsreiter has said the Austrian telecoms incumbent is to explore possible synergies with KPN (The Hague, the Netherlands), its counterpart in the Netherlands, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
The two telecoms companies have a common shareholder in America Movil (Mexico City, Mexico), the Latin American mobile-phone operator owned by Mexico’s Carlos Slim, one of the world’s wealthiest men.
Ametsreiter said that talks with KPN were due to begin shortly.
Slim made his first entry into Europe’s mobile-phone markets earlier this summer when he purchased shares in both Telekom Austria and KPN.
Ametsreiter said that he has already had constructive talks with America Movil over possible synergies. According to Dow Jones, he declined to elaborate on their content but hoped to provide some details at Telekom Austria’s capital markets day in December.
America Movil currently owns 6.75% of Telekom Austria but Slim has agreed to build his shareholding to about 20% of the company.
That deal is awaiting approval from regulatory authorities in Austria.
