Spain’s Telefonica is touting its M2M credentials after scoring highly in two separate rankings of M2M communications service providers in recent weeks.
Telefonica Digital, the operator’s M2M division, topped the 2013 M2M Scorecard compiled by analyst firm Analysys Mason and was highlighted for its centralized structure and partnership philosophy.
Although Vodafone (Newbury, UK) retained its top spot in Machina Research’s annual benchmarking study, Telefonica (Madrid, Spain) was singled out as “the company that has done most during the last 12 months to strengthen its position in M2M”.
Machina Research lauded the operator for its coverage of Europe and Latin American markets, strategic alliances, R&D capabilities and multi-carrier IMSI swapping arrangements.
Telefonica said the findings were a “strong endorsement” of its strategy, which has involved participation in the eight-operator M2M alliance involving platform provider Jasper Wireless and the development of appropriate partnerships in horizontal connectivity and vertical value-added services markets.
Telefonica has also recently received praise from Current Analysis, another market-research company, for developing solutions that go beyond connectivity sales.
“All three reports reflect the strong momentum we have in our M2M business,” said Carlos Morales, director of M2M and cloud at Telefonica Digital. “They are also a real endorsement of our approach to this market, combining our excellent R&D capabilities with the right alliances and partnerships to meet the needs of a wide variety of customers.”
Matt Hatton, the author of the Machina Research report, said Telefonica’s lead role in the multi-operator alliance, strategic arrangements with companies like Telit and Masternaut and move up the value chain – with products like usage-based insurance – persuaded him to rank the operator among the leading service providers in the M2M market.
Meanwhile, Analysys Mason referred to the high level of commitment from Telefonica’s M2M partners.
“We also believe the creation of Telefonica Digital has given it the right organizational structure with a dedicated M2M services team,” said Steve Hilton, an analyst with Analysys Mason.
