CDPs are used to facilitate the deployment and management of connected devices for M2N applications over cellular networks. They are typically used by mobile network operators (MNOs) and provided to M2M application deployers as a cloud service. Although some operators have built their own CDPs, most are now turning to solutions developed by third parties. That market is expected to be worth around $2.14 billion in 2017, according to ABI Research  (Oyster Bay, N.Y., USA).
“Several vendors are active in the market, including Ericsson, NSN, and NEC, among others, but the clear leader, in terms of sheer number of operator partners and market traction, is ‘pure-play’ provider Jasper Wireless ,” says Sam Lucero of ABI Research.
CDPs are becoming an integral part of MNOs’ service offerings as the M2M market enters the mainstream, making their development and provisioning a critical issue. Now that AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, Vodafone, Orange, Telefónica and Telenor Connexion have deployed solutions, some vendors have suggested that the Tier 1 MNO market for CDPs is largely “wrapped up”. Yet ABI Research says there is still a considerable untapped opportunity among Tier 2 MNOs and MNOs in the Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
The market-research company also believes that there may be an “upgrade inflection point” in the near future, when MNOs that have either deployed their own platforms or used ones from third parties decide to bring in new outside providers. “Merchant market providers should be aggressively positioning themselves now to be the upgrade choice for current CDP-deployed MNOs, as well as targeting MNOs outside of the established Tier 1 players in North America and Europe,” says Lucero.
