Royal Philips is to provide telemonitoring services to Partners HealthCare at Home, a home health provider in Massachusetts, with the aim of reducing readmissions and improving clinical oversight for newly discharged patients.
The technology means that nursing staff from Partners (Waltham, MA, USA) can remotely monitor a patient’s health by tracking vital signs.
“Remote patient monitoring does more than improve care coordination,” says Sue Beausoliel, vice president of operations at Partners. “It provides a tool for patients to actively engage in their own health management.”
“As the healthcare industry focuses more on improving patient experience and outcomes while reducing costs, technologies such as home monitoring contribute toward improved quality of life,” added Beausoliel. “Instead of having to wait for the next appointment, this real-time data daily monitoring helps us connect with patients, track their health status, alert us to a problem and intervene earlier before it becomes full blown."
Partners has already made some use of telemonitoring technology through its Chronic Cardiac Care program, which has led to a 50% reduction in readmission rates for enrolled patients – with estimated savings of $10 million in healthcare costs – since being introduced in 2006.
However, the tie-up with Philips (Eindhoven, Netherlands) indicates the provider is increasingly keen to expand the range of telemonitoring services at its disposal.
Partners says it was persuaded to choose Philips for telemonitoring after its experience of using the Dutch company’s Lifeline and Medication Dispensing services.
It also claims to have installed the first 200 home monitors in patient homes in a period of less than two weeks, using its own network of installers to accelerate the process and to provide the training needed to ensure clinical and patient adoption.
