Satellite company Orbcomm has teamed up with sensors specialist Savi Technology to develop new location-based monitoring services for government and commercial markets.
The two companies have already submitted a proposal to the US Army to develop RFID tags and satellite solutions for military logistics support.
They hope to capitalize on Orbcomm’s (Rochelle Park, NJ, USA) relationships with the US military through its GlobalTrak division, which has provided services to the government market since 2008, as well as Savi’s (Alexandria, VA, USA) position as the market leader in military RFID solutions.
“The combination of Orbcomm’s satellite expertise and broad network service portfolio with Savi’s state-of-the-art RFID technology offers a full spectrum of innovative monitoring solutions to our collective market base with focus on our government and international customers,” said Marc Eisenberg, Orbcomm’s chief executive officer.
“Although RFID and satellite tracking have traditionally been divergent technologies, the synergy of these solutions within a common operating environment creates a seamless transition from infrastructure to wireless-based location services for tracking and monitoring high-value assets,” he added.
Bill Clark, Savi’s chief executive, believes the tie-up between market leaders with complementary technologies will give rise to so-called “best of breed” solutions for customers in government and commercial markets.
“This relationship will support Savi’s operational analytics capabilities by providing additional ways to collect critical data and deliver timely and reliable operational intelligence to our customers,” he said. “We look forward to partnering with Orbcomm on … other global opportunities in the near future.”
