Logistics company Ryder is to begin using telematics services from Orbcomm across its fleet of trailer assets, the two organizations have announced.
Ryder (Miami, FL, USA) was already a customer of Orbcomm (Rochelle Park, NJ, USA), which claims to have deployed more than 2,000 systems on Ryder’s trailers, but the new deal marks a significant extension of their partnership.
In a statement, satellite company Orbcomm said it would provide connectivity services plus a web-based analytics platform to Ryder, which operates a fleet of more than 30,000 dry van, refrigerated and flatbed trailers.
The service has been customized so that Ryder customers can more easily monitor their assets in real time, improving visibility and utilization, and also provides refrigerated trailer monitoring and control for Ryder’s cold chain customers as a safeguard against product spoilage and to ensure compliance with new food safety regulations.
Ryder is to use Orbcomm’s GT1100 – a so-called “ruggedized” device that includes solar recharging technology – with its range of dry van and flatbed trailers, and will rely on Orbcomm’s RT6000+ – a two-way monitoring and control device that provides diagnostics information – for its refrigerated trailers.
Meanwhile, a customized web application will provide Ryder with advanced data reporting and analytics capabilities.
“By leveraging Orbcomm’s full systems solution, Ryder can utilize our telematics technology, hardware and network service for both lease and rental fleets to provide customers with maximum efficiency and return on investment as well as allow them to comply with product reporting requirements,” said Marc Eisenberg, Orbcomm’s chief executive.
