Last week, nine Japanese companies launched a demonstration study for the Albuquerque Business District Smart Grid Demonstration Project, which is to be carried out as part of its Japan-U.S. Collaborative Smart Grid Demonstration Project. The demonstration study will continue for two years.
The nine Japanese companies include: Shimizu Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Meidensha Corporation, Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and The Furukawa Battery Co., Ltd.
The Project demonstration study will be conducted using an existing three-story commercial building with approximately 7,000 square meters in total floor space, and an electric power load near 400 kilowatts (kW). A micro grid (to supply power from the demand side) will be installed in the building from power sources consisting of a 50kW photovoltaic (PV) power generation system, a 240kW gas-engine generator, 80kW fuel cells and a 90kW battery system.
According to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, by controlling each of these power generation systems, the demonstration study will: perform demand and supply adjustment within the building based on requests from a commercial electric utility supplier; operate the power generation systems according to energy and heat demand within the building itself; and compensate for power output fluctuations in the PV power generation system of the regional utility company.
Project participants from the U.S. side will include the regional utility firm - Public Service Company of New Mexico - as well as Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and the University of New Mexico. Their involvement will enable a collaborative smart grid demonstration encompassing cooperation between the utility and demand sides.
In addition, Accenture (Dublin), a management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company, and Itochu Corporation (Osaka, Japan), a general trading company, will respectively undertake Project data management and demonstration site management support.
The nine participating Japanese companies signed a project implementation agreement with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in August 2010. By September 2011, they had completed the design and manufacture of the Project's various power sources, heat source equipment and control system. Between October 2011 and April 2012, they transported, installed and adjusted the equipment at the building site.
Below are the roles of the nine Japanese companies participating in the project:
+ Shimizu Corporation (Tokyo), an architectural, engineering and general contracting firm, designs and establishes the overall micro grid system, builds energy management systems and heat storage air-conditioning system, and manages and verify the entire system.
+ Toshiba Corporation (Tokyo), an electrical equipment and information technology company, designs, establishes and performs verifications of the smart grid energy management system.
+ Sharp Corporation (Osaka, Japan), a company that designs and manufactures electronic products, designs, procures and performs verifications of the photovoltaic power generation system.
+Meidensha Corporation, a manufacturer of electric appliance products and services, designs, procures and performs verifications of the power control system (PCS) for photovoltaic power generation
+ Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), a provider of natural gas to main cities in Japan, designs, establishes and performs verifications of distributed power source management methods.
+ Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Tokyo), an engineering, electrical equipment and electronics company, designs, manufacturers and performs verifications of gas-engine power generators and its controls.
+ Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), a supplier of turbine generator equipment to the power generation industry, designs, procures and performs verifications on fuel cells.
+ Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), a manufacturer of cable and copper products, designs, procures and performs verifications on battery management systems.
+ The Furukawa Battery Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), a manufacturer of batteries, electrical machineries and equipment, designs, procures and performs verifications on batteries.
