New Zealand’s International Telematics and Gen-i have formed an M2M partnership aimed at providing fleet-management services to some of the world’s biggest transportation operators.
The tie-up brings together remote-tracking specialist International Telematics (Auckland, New Zealand) and the ICT service division of Telecom New Zealand (Auckland, New Zealand), the country’s biggest telecoms operator.
Stephen Brown, the executive director of customer relations for International Telematics, said he viewed Gen-i as a “long-term premium technology partner”.
“Telematics is the expression coined to explain the integration of telecommunications and real time information,” explains Brown. “The concept has huge application in the transportation space where we operate.”
“Having Gen-i as a premium partner is a reflection of the direction in which we’ve focused ITL’s business,” he added. “We build in the ability for our clients to easily scale up, and they are comfortable doing so with us because we have products and partners such as Gen-i, who understand the needs of businesses operating at an enterprise level.”
Technology developed by International Telematics provides fleet managers with real-time information about the whereabouts of vehicles, the condition of loads they are carrying and the performance of drivers.
The deal between the two companies will see Gen-i fit SIM cards into the devices International Telematics supplies.

Like other telecoms operators, Telecom New Zealand sees M2M as a growth opportunity that could offset the decline in revenues from traditional business activities, including the provision of basic voice and text-messaging services.
