Juniper Research has weighed into the M2M forecasting game with its own prediction that service revenues in the industry will reach $20 billion globally in 2015, as players focus on simplifying the process of rolling out M2M technology for end users.
However, in a new report, the market-research company says that monetization opportunities will differ significantly by vertical market.
While the telematics scenario looks particularly positive, smart metering is still struggling to find an avenue for revenue generation – says Juniper – despite high forecast numbers and regulatory drivers.
Juniper also expects service revenues to substantially exceed revenues from managing connectivity over the forecast period.
Like other analyst firms, including Machina Research, it also expects faster mobile broadband networks to play a bigger role in M2M deployments in future.
M2M service provision based on LTE technology is already beginning to find a market in CCTV, mobile point-of-sale, digital signage and as a back-up for fixed broadband, says the company.
According to Juniper, operators are increasingly deploying sophisticated cloud-based application programming interfaces to address the growing complexity of the M2M industry.
Even so, M2M specialists remain the primary creators of the ecosystems behind M2M deployments.
“Operators continue to play a fundamental role in M2M,” said report author Anthony Cox, “but there is still significant scope for new players focusing on either new technology approaches, or a particular angle of the M2M market.”
Among other report findings are that falling chipset prices will spur the take-up of mobile technologies for M2M services, and that telematics will remain the “anchor M2M industry sector”, with virtually all major vehicle makers now deploying or planning to deploy M2M modules in new vehicles.
Juniper says the installed base of cellular M2M devices will approach 500 million modules by 2018, driven mainly by telematics and in-vehicle applications.
