Honeywell and Stor Generation have announced details of a “first of its kind” smart-grid program in the UK aimed at cutting energy consumption in commercial and industrial facilities.
The technology partners say the energy savings will be used to help stabilize the electrical grid and address country-wide carbon reduction and renewable energy commitments.
Under the program, Stor (London, UK) is to pay facility owners to reduce their energy consumption when usage begins to put pressure on the production capacity of power plants and renewable resources.
Honeywell (Morristown, NJ, USA) will then collaborate with those organizations to implement automated demand response (ADR) systems that will address the usage of heating and cooling equipment, lighting and other building systems.
Stor is to use Honeywell’s Akuacom SaaS-based offering to connect with participating facilities and let them know when it is necessary to reduce energy use.
It will then aggregate and providing the reserves to the National Grid (London, UK) for its so-called Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) initiative – aimed at ensuring the grid is able to cope with spikes in consumption.
Honeywell and Stor say their partnership effort will represent the debut of ADR technology in the National Grid’s UK and European territories.
Stor also claims to be the first energy aggregator in the region using ADR to reduce pressure on the grid rather than asking customers to switch to back-up diesel generators.
“The technology required to avoid a megawatt of consumption costs a fraction of that needed to pump out an additional megawatt,” said Jeremy Eaton, vice president of Honeywell Smart Grid Solutions. "From a cost-benefit standpoint, ADR is the most prudent option for reducing energy use and is the most clean, sustainable path to energy reliability.”
Honeywell says it will conduct site audits to provide testing and training and connect each facility to the automated system, while Stor Generation signs up companies for the program.
Building owners will have to select and approve specific energy-reduction measures before they are registered.
The companies say the hardware and software installed will also help organizations to better manage electricity usage on a daily basis and boost long-term energy efficiency.
