General Motors has topped a new ranking of OEM safety and security telematics vendors, beating Ford into second place and Toyota into third.
The company’s OnStar solution was ranked number one in a Competitive Assessment carried out by ABI Research.
ABI scored General Motors (Detroit, USA) highly for the range of OnStar features as well as its market share, quality and reliability.
Ford (Detroit, USA) came out well in terms of regional coverage, market share, pricing and smartphone integration, while Toyota (Aichi, Japan) performed strongly on open platforms and ecosystem partnerships.
“OnStar remains the leading safety and security telematics solution in the United States, offering the most complete range of safety and security features, including state of the art emergency calling, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle tracking, immobilization, and recovery,” said Dominique Bonte, an ABI vice president and practice director, in a statement. “It is offered as a standard feature on all GM models with one year free subscription.”
ABI’s Competitive Assessment rated ten well-known OEM safety and security telematics on 12 “innovation” and “implementation” criteria and also scored them on the basis of market share.
General Motors has 6.4 million telematics subscribers around the world, giving it a market share of 24.6%, but questions remain about the scalability of its proprietary technology and its premium business model.
Ford scored highly on regional coverage because its free hybrid SYNC telematics solution, which offers E911 emergency calling and remote diagnostics, is currently used in more than 4 million vehicles in North America. Its main weakness is quality and reliability due to the dependence on phones.
Meanwhile, Toyota, which ABI describes as a “rising star”, has been offering its G-BOOK telematics service in Japan since 2002 but only recently launched telematics in the US (Safety Connect) and China. It scores highly on open platforms and partnerships, as illustrated by its co-operation with Microsoft (Seattle, USA) to build a global next-generation platform based on Windows Azure cloud technology.
