Telecoms equipment maker Ericsson is to provide its connected-car technology for use in new vehicles being made by Volvo.
The vendor’s “Connected Vehicle Cloud” will allow drivers and passengers to access cloud applications for information, navigation and entertainment using a screen in the car.
Ericsson (Stockholm, Sweden) says that Volvo (Torslanda, Sweden) will be able to open up parts of the platform to other players in the automotive industry, including internet radio providers, road authorities, cities’ governments and toll-road operators.
Volvo will also be able to establish agreements with content providers.
“We clearly see that cars in the near future will integrate the same level of digital services that consumers today are used to having in their homes or at work,” said Lex Kerssemakers, the senior vice president of product strategy and vehicle line management at Volvo. “This is a strategically important part of Volvo’s investments for the future, where we intend to take a leading position.”
The partnership will see Ericsson integrating its systems with those of Volvo and then providing managed services for a global cloud solution, ensuring there is a secure connection between the vehicle and other players in the value chain.
“Drivers want service that technology makes possible, in real time and in the context that fits them personally,” said Per Borgklint, the head of business unit support systems for Ericsson. “Our skills in system integration and service enablement will match Volvo’s strategy.”
Ericsson says that the combination of its consulting, systems integration and managed services experience with Volvo’s expertise in driver behavior and traffic safety measurements will be used to develop future services.
