Argentina’s Claro has been unveiled as the latest operator to become a customer of M2M platform provider Jasper Wireless, raising questions about the potential involvement of Claro owner America Movil in the Jasper-led M2M alliance.
The operator, which runs the biggest mobile network in Argentina, says the deal will help its operating companies in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to deliver new services through connected enterprise and consumer electronics devices.
“At Claro [Buenos Aires, Argentina], we see a huge opportunity in the growing M2M market, but the path to serve customers’ needs lies in moving up the value chain and making integration part of the end-to-end business model,” said Marcelo Guglielmucci, Claro’s marketing manager for the enterprise market.
“Partnering with Jasper [Mountain View, CA, USA] is an important step towards being fully equipped to support the expansive growth across various vertical industries with a more robust service,” he added.
A number of Tier One operators are now using the Jasper Wireless platform and eight of these – Etisalat (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), KPN (The Hague, Netherlands), NTT DoCoMo (Tokyo, Japan), Rogers Communications (Toronto, Canada), SingTel (Singapore), Telefonica (Madrid, Spain), Telstra (Melbourne, Australia) and VimpelCom (Amsterdam, Netherlands) – are now members of a nameless alliance aimed at accelerating the development and take-up of M2M products and services.
In opposition to that group is the Global M2M Association – involving Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Telecom Italia (Milan, Italy), TeliaSonera (Stockholm, Sweden) and Orange (Paris, France) – which has criticized its rival for constructing an alliance around a single platform, arguing this will reduce its opportunities in the long term.
Jasper’s deal with Argentina’s Claro builds on an existing relationship with America Movil (Mexico City, Mexico), which has relied on the platform provider to power M2M services from Claro Brazil (Brasilia, Brazil) since February this year.
Argentina’s Claro and Jasper say that several M2M projects are already under way, and that full commercial rollout of M2M services in Argentina is imminent.
