Ciena Corporation (Linthicum, Md.), a supplier of telecommunications networking equipment, on Monday announced the evolution of its packet-optical portfolio designed to enable intelligent infrastructures using advanced silicon, software and switching technologies. Ciena also announced its OneControl Unified Management System, a component of its software portfolio that unifies visibility and control of wavelength, OTN and packet services from edge access through the network core.
Ciena added OTN switching to its 6500 Series and 5410 Reconfigurable Switching System, and is introducing a 2-slot variant of the 6500 Series for smaller, network edge installations.
According to Dave Parks, Ciena’s product marketing director, using OTN switching aims to make the network as efficient as possible.
“By adding switching to the IP network what you would be doing is you would increase the level of connectivity of IP routers without having to add addition ports or resources,” said Parks. “So now you can drive down a lot of costs by your IP network, which in a lot of cases is your most expensive network.”
Optical Control Plane
The supplier is extending its optical control plane to its 6500 Series for enabling multi-domain (metro and core) automated mesh provisioning and restoration, operated-defined service levels and 99 % service availability across its installed base.
“This allows you to very affectively re-route traffic in the event of a failure,” said Parks. “We have had a lot of experiences with our customers through various outages, whether it was a ship dropping an anchor on an undersea cable, or a natural disaster, like a typhoon or the earthquakes and tsunamis and Japan, where customers have been able to continue to provide service to their customers because of control plane resilience.”
Ciena is introducing OneControl Unified Management System, which offers cohesive visibility and control of wavelength, OTN and packet services from the edge access through the network core.
Designed as an evolution of Ciena’s existing management platforms, OneControl delivers multi-layer intelligence that supports a variety of capabilities – from reconfiguring wavelengths at Layer 0 up to monitoring and reporting on service level agreements at Layer 2 – all through a single user interface.
Ciena is adding WaveLogic coherent optical processors to the 5400 Series, also previously announced on the 4200 Series. Coherent Optics scales bandwidth for maximum capacity.
“Most of these networks today are built with 10G technology,” said Parks. “With coherent optics you can now scale that to 100G and beyond.”
