Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Inc. (BVS) (Metuchen, N.J., U.S.A), a provider of security products for the telecommunications industry, released the Squid M2M 3G Cell Tower Tester.
The Squid 3G Cell Tower Tester is a handheld receiver that provides installers and electrical engineers a real time display of local 3G carriers’ base stations and their respective signal strength or Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI).
According to BVS, Squid identifies RSSI, carrier network and type of 3G band (CDMA, GSM, etc.) providing installers with enough information to make installation site decisions as well as antenna placement all in an effort to choose the best mobile carrier for their particular site. This aims to prevent installers and electricians from relying on consumer grade cell phones for important install decisions.
The Squid contains multiple radios and multi-band antennae for several U.S. network carriers, according to BVS, which means no SIM activation or monthly contracts are required. BVS goes on to say that a single Squid can provide all the data needed for UMTS, CDMA, GSM and GPRS networks.
The Squid targets the issues faced by contractors installing ATMs, electric vehicle charging stations, vending machines and kiosks of all types but can also be used for 3G carrier discovery and quality assurance testing.
