Semiconductor specialist Broadcom has launched a new Bluetooth-enabled system-on-a-chip designed to support emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
The device includes advanced security features and support for Apple’s (Cupertino, CA, USA) iBeacon indoor positioning system.
The company says it is responding to the increase in privacy concerns triggered by the steady rise in data sharing across smartphones, tablets, wearables, home appliances, healthcare products and sensory applications.
Besides facilitating encryption and decryption, the system-on-a-chip supports iBeacon technology to ensure that devices can be identified and detected more easily.
Users would, for instance, be able to find a set of car keys that included the technology by activating a smartphone application that detects a low-power transmitter on the keys.
The Broadcom (Irvine, CA, USA) design also includes a Bluetooth smart chip with wireless charging support.
“Broadcom continues to build on its … success by tackling privacy concerns and keeping data safe with our new Bluetooth smart chip,” said Brian Bedrosian, Broadcom’s senior director of embedded wireless. “In addition, support for iBeacon is critical to Broadcom as the technology has seen strong adoption and is quickly gaining momentum in retail stores, sports venues, airports and more.”

According to ABI Research, some 2.7 billion Bluetooth-enabled products will ship this year – 20% more than in 2013 – as more people connect accessories to mobile devices and PCs.
“Advanced security in Bluetooth chips is becoming increasingly important to protect products from being hacked and to encrypt data being sent between products,” said Philip Solis, a research director with ABI. “Broadcom's Bluetooth Smart product can help reduce the risks these connections pose to consumers.”
