UK utility British Gas has extended its partnership with smart-grid platform provider Trilliant, with the two companies working to develop “pre-payment capability” for the smart-metering system.
The companies have worked together for the past four years on developing open standards for the deployment of a smart-metering system in the UK market, and say they are now taking their partnership into the so-called Foundation stage of the rollout.
That will see the introduction of pre-payment functionality and the continued extension of the metering system across the country.
Under UK regulations, utility companies must provide smart meters to all consumers in the country by 2019.
According to a study by market-research company Oxford Economics, the smart-metering deployment will generate net benefits of £14 billion ($21.4 billion) in the form of consumer energy savings and lower energy generation demand.
Besides supplying the hubs for the communications system operated by British Gas (Windsor, UK), Trilliant (Redwood City, CA, USA) is also managing the smart-metering business processes and communications service through its UnitySuite software.
“We are committed to bringing this standards-based solution to the broader UK market supporting a smooth transition from the current rollout to the UK-wide mandated rollout,” said Stuart Rolland, the managing director of smart metering for British Gas.
Claiming to serve more than 200 utilities worldwide, Trilliant says the UK deal builds on four years of successful collaboration with British Gas.
