Axeda Corporation, a cloud platform provider for M2M and connected devices, and Multi-Tech Systems, a provider of M2M communications products and services, on Monday announced a new alliance that will further reduce the cost and complexity of bringing complete machine-to-machine (M2M) services to market.
According to recent findings from ABI Research (Oyster Bay, N.Y., USA), a key challenge for the M2M industry remains the complexity of developing, deploying, and managing M2M applications over the cellular network. To address this problem, Multi-Tech (Mounds View, M.N., USA) will utilize Axeda’s (Foxboro, Mass., USA) cloud-based M2M application development and data management capabilities, while Axeda leverages Multi-Tech’s cellular modems to make device and asset management simpler.
“There has been a concentrated effort among the ecosystem of M2M providers to make the process of getting from concept to completion for M2M solutions shorter, less expensive, and more simplified,” said Keith Bartlett, vice president of business development, Axeda . “By partnering with Multi-Tech, our customers will have access to...cellular modems and communication devices that serve a wide range of industries, enabling them to leverage pre-integrated solutions when selecting hardware.”
At Axeda Connexion in Cambridge this week, AT&T  (Dallas, Texas, USA) in collaboration with Axeda and Multi-Tech demonstrated its cloud-based service with its smart vending machine. The vending machine connects to the AT&T wireless network through a MultiConnect OCG-D open communications gateway device and sends live machine data through the Axeda Platform. Attendees at Connexion were able to view in real-time which vending items are the most popular, associated inventory levels, and total sales revenues.
Also at Axeda Connexion, AT&T, Axeda, and Multi-Tech showed a demonstration of an integrated M2M developer kit for cloud-based device and asset management, which the companies aim to have commercially available later this year. The kit brings three service components together; the device, network, and application in a way that allows companies to focus on their solution’s value without spending months of research and education to pull the M2M infrastructure pieces together on their own, says Axeda. Customers get hardware that meets a wide array of use cases, a network that handles the unique characteristics of M2M, and a cloud application platform that allows them rapid deployment.
