AT&T has struck a deal to provide smart-grid services to Duck River Electric, the fourth largest electric cooperative in the state of Tennessee.
The deal will see AT&T (Dallas, TX, USA) provide a number of smart-grid services to Duck River, including advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart grid meter data management and other smart grid applications.
Claiming to serve about 71,000 members, Duck River says it came to AT&T to upgrade its smart grid infrastructure, reduce its operational costs and improve its customer service.
“Our smart grid project goal is to deliver high-value applications to our members … with minimum investment of capital and time,” said Michael Watson, Duck River’s vice president.
“Deploying our own wireless network would take years to build and manage; AT&T has simplified this process for us, and their highly reliable network will enable smart grid to perform at high speeds, and allow us to focus on delivering the best service to our members,” said Watson.
AT&T claims its AMI devices will send notifications when electricity is lost or there is a technical problem, allowing Duck River to take immediate action.
Moreover, its meter data management system should help Duck River to begin offering new services, such as prepaid electricity.
“The ability to communicate with remote devices over AT&T’s network can dramatically improve customer service and efficiency levels, as well as lower costs,” said Mike Troiano, AT&T’s vice president of advanced mobility solutions.
