Network capacity is a key problem for major telecom operators today. The lack of spectrum and increased data usage are placing a huge strain on mobile networks, causing many carriers to turn to capped data plans to manage the increased customer data usage. Millenoki , a mobile data control company based out of the UK, has instead put the control in the consumers hands with a new mobile application that gives the customer different tools to control their own data usage.
The “datasquasher” is an application that works on iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Phone 7 operating systems to provide customers with a way to control data consumption.
For example, the application can allow the customer to choose the image quality for all images that may show up in the browser. By lowering the image quality, less data will be used.
Another option would be to turn off flash and video completely, block advertisements, compressing text or blocking out malicious websites.
The datasquasher application makes downloading speeds faster and cuts down on browsing time-outs. By altering these preferences through the application, a customer on average consumes 90% less data.
The application is being demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and will eventually be offered on a monthly subscription basis.
