Alstom has been chosen by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to provide state-of-the-art grid security technologies for a new energy management program.
Valued at INR3.82 billion ($61.2 billion), the contract covers the supply of both hardware and software, said the technology player, in what is set to be the world’s largest grid wide area monitoring system.
PGCIL (Gurgaon, India) aims to be able to monitor power flows across the nationwide grid and respond to fluctuations within a fraction of a second, using real-time data to ensure that electricity supply matches demand.
Alstom (Paris, France) is to provide more than 1,300 of its MiCOM P847 Phasor Measurement Units for the collection of more than 18,000 real-time synchronized measurements from 351 substations across the country.
It will also equip 34 control centers at existing load dispatch sites with software that analyses weak spots in the system in real time.
This can detect disturbances and allow system operators to take timely decisions to avoid blackouts.
“This is a significant step change in India’s energy management and Alstom is delighted to play its part in allowing a more intelligent grid,” said Patrick Plas, senior vice president of power electronics and automation at Alstom. “The timeliness and quality of the data will provide control room operators with the smartest tool yet to optimise the existing grid assets.”
“This will ensure reliability, and ultimately provide the highest availability of electricity to India’s citizens,” he added.
India’s electricity network suffered the world’s largest blackout in 2012 and PGCIL is keen to ensure that does not happen again.
