Orange Business Services (Paris, France) has teamed up with telematics specialist Openmatics (Friedrichshafen, Germany) to provide M2M services that can be used on trucks and buses.

The France Telecom-owned company has signed what it calls a strategic partnership with Openmatics, which is in the process of developing its offer by adding more applications to its platform.

Openmatics will use Orange’s M2M Centre in Brussels for data-transfer purposes. Specifically, the operator says it will provide a managed connectivity service that allows Openmatics to order, activate and track SIMs through a portal.

“The M2M communications infrastructure provided by Orange is key to our go-to-market strategy as our customers are requiring global support,” said Thomas Rösch, managing director of Openmatics, in a statement. “Orange is our partner of choice because the company has an international footprint and a strong M2M ambition. Orange offers us a single, dedicated entity for managing our global M2M connectivity requirements, and our partnership has the potential to support us with managed services for our platform in the future.”

Openmatics claims the service will allow fleet managers to monitor the location and status of trucks and buses, as well as send them apps and media files.

Vehicle makers and third parties will also be able to develop their own apps and send them for download through the Openmatics web store.

“We are proud to support the innovative Openmatics platform with our international M2M connectivity services, which will support Openmatics’ global growth strategy,” said Gordon Makryllos, managing director of Orange Business Services Australasia. “Orange Business Services is unsurpassed in providing comprehensive M2M solutions with quality of service and a large global footprint. These are indispensible preconditions for the export-oriented German industry to operate successfully in international markets.”

Berg Insight, a market-research company, expects the number of European fleet telematics systems to grow at a compound annual rate of 17.9% over the next few years, with 5.7 million systems in use in 2016.
