OpenADR, WI-SUN Alliances partner to support interoperability

The OpenADR Alliance and the WI-SUN Alliance have announced a partnership designed to speed up the rollout of energy-efficient program offerings.

The two standards bodies say they will work together on enabling interoperability between smart utility networks and utility demand response systems based on the OpenADR specification.

The two standards bodies say they will work together on enabling interoperability between smart utility networks and utility demand response systems based on the OpenADR specification.

While the OpenADR Alliance aims to foster the development and adoption of the OpenADR standard, the WI-SUN Alliance is an association of companies developing products based on the IEEE 802.15.4g standard and says its membership is open to all corporations.

“Both the Wi-SUN Alliance and the OpenADR Alliance are finding growing acceptance of their respective specifications globally,” said Barry Haaser, managing director of the OpenADR Alliance. “It is important to enable interoperability between the two specifications to provide seamless connectivity between Wi-SUN based smart-utility networks and OpenADR based automated demand response programs.”

The WI-SUN Alliance said the tie-up would benefit energy providers deploying smart utility networks and automated demand response programs by ultimately helping to lower the costs of rollout.

“The two industry standards are highly complementary, offering Utility companies more flexibility in their demand response and energy management program offerings,” said Phil Beecher, chairman of the Wi-SUN Alliance.

Both organizations said they would collaborate with respective members and offer incentives to them to encourage joint participation in complementary activities.
