Numerex Corp, a provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) products and services, last week unveiled its new Location-Based Services (LBS) platform, which provides enterprises with services for monitoring, tracking and recovering a variety of mobile assets.

This new platform addresses the needs of agriculture, transportation, construction and many other industries seeking to implement tracking and monitoring services for mobile or semi-mobile assets. Numerex’s (Atlanta, Ga., USA) LBS platform provides asset visibility and control from one multilingual, web-based portal. It supports configurable applications, integrating to long-life battery- and vehicle-powered M2M devices connected through both cellular and satellite networks, says Numerex.

The new platform allows tracking devices to be installed, activated and visible on a mapping application in minutes. Connectivity is tailored to meet budget and geographic need, says Numerex. Users can also tell when the asset goes in motion, and can track its movement.

“Knowing where mobile assets are at any point in time, and when they move unexpectedly, is a top-of-mind issue across a number of industries. The cost of setting up and deploying a solution requiring cellular or satellite coverage used to break the business model except for very high value assets,” says Darren Koenig, vice president of marketing and products at Numerex.

According to Numerex, its new LBS platform can help users show a return on investment, even for assets worth only a few thousand dollars.  A simple, hypotehtic example, says Numerex, is tracking a $5,000 generator which has a 10% chance of being stolen that year.

“If I can beat $500 in annual total cost of ownership, I have a positive ROI,” says a Numerex spokesperson.  “Without being specific as to pricing, suffice it to say that the generator example would have an ROI of much greater than 50%.”

Built on the company’s horizontal service delivery platform which includes Network as a Service managing disparate wireless connectivity options; Platform as a Service enabling data consolidation, manipulation, and delivery; and Software as a Service providing intelligent, web-based applications – this LBS Platform enables enterprises to add new capabilities to their existing infrastructure, says Numerex.

“As a horizontal LBS platform, we have the ability to add location-specific functions into other products as well as simplifying adding the capabilities to custom solutions,” says a Numerex spokesperson.

Numerex can manage the entire process from development through deployment, as well as provide application development, integration and implementation.
