Electronic Couch Potato gets first buyer

Pixelmetrix announced today it received the first order for its Electronic Couch Potato (ECP) and ECP Consolidator, from an unnamed but "major" Europe-based IPTV operator. The ECP is an after-the-network probe that measures and reports end-users' experience for delivered video services, while the ECP consolidator acts as a central management console for several ECPs.


Sun heads up AEGIS Project

Sun Microsystems is leading the AEGIS Project, an international consortium of over 20 companies and organizations that aims to resolve accessibility challenges for all types of devices, includng cell phones, desktops and Web applications, using open-source technologies. The AEGIS (open Accessibility Everywhere: Groundwork, Infrastructure, Standards) project is funded by a grant awarded by the European Commission and is based on Sun's proposal and technical architecture.

RADVISION receives patent

Video network infrastructure provider RADVISION Ltd., based in Tel Aviv, announced Thursday it has been granted a U.S. patent, numbered 7464167, for reducing 3G call connect time to under one second.

More iPhone apps on the way

MacroSolve, Inc., parent company of Anyware Mobile Solutions, has become a certified iPhone developer and will develop applications for iPhone and iPod users. It will market its applications through the App Store.

Sigma acquires Zensys

Sigma Designs on Thursday signed a definitive agreement to acquire Zensys, a single-chip RF developer whose signature product, Z-Wave, has been designed into over 250 smart home products worldwide. The agreement calls for an undisclosed cash payment, with the sale expected to close by the end of this month.

Cisco tops ABI Vendor Matrix

A recent Vendor Matrix released by ABI Research puts Cisco Systems at the top of the list in research telepresence, due to "the tight integration of its unified communications, its financial stability, its partnerships and its channel," ABI vice president Stan Schatt said. Tandberg and Teliris claimed the second and third spots in the evaluation.

Tekelec buys mBalance

Tekelec has acquired messaging solutions developer mBalance, the company announced Thursday, through its Belgian subsidiary Tekelec International, SPRL, for €28 million (approximately US$39.5 million). mBalance's text messaging software is already part of Tekelec's TekMedia solution.

Chapter 11 for Telemetrix

Wireless services vendor Telemetrix (which does business as Convey Wireless) filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, citing long-term indebtedness coupled with a lack of refinancing solutions. The 25-year-old company is seeking Chapter 11 protection.

TEOCO, Telarix reach settlement

Network services provider TEOCO announced Tuesday it reached a definitive settlement with Telarix, Inc. in a lawsuit that had been pending in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

3Com has elected David H.Y. Ho to serve as a Class I director. He is the eighth member of the 3Com Board of Directors and is an "independent" director. Ho is former chairman of the Greater China Region for Nokia Siemens Networks.

MPLS-based service provider Cybera on Tuesday announced the hiring of Paul Melton as Vice President of Enterprise Sales. Melton was formerly co-founder and Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Global Linking Solutions.

TriQuint CEO Ralph Quinsey was named CEO of the Year for technology companies in Oregon by the Portland Business Journal.

Israel-based ECI Telecom received Frost & Sullivan's 2008 Global Product Differentiation Innovation Award for the World IPTV Access market, the company announced Tuesday. The company's Hi-FOCuS Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) was cited as a factor in receiving the award, along with its product differentiation and commitment to innovation and future-proofing.
