When it comes to wireless, there’s no shortage of technologies — 3G, 4G, WiMAX and LTE, not to mention megamergers like the recently accepted Alltel/Verizon deal. In this Audiocast, Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks with Frank Bernhard, research director and technology economist for Omni Research, about the state of the wireless market and where he believes it's heading during a challenging economic time.

Bernhard addresses the following questions in this Audiocast:

• The wireless industry seems to be in a state of flux, especially as Verizon Wireless acquires Alltel, not to mention the ongoing WiMAX vs. LTE debate. Can you talk about the state of the overall market and the opportunities you see ahead?

• While it's clear that some operators like AT&T and Verizon already have a wireless play, others like EMBARQ have not, although that will change with their merger with CenturyTel. How important is a wireless play for traditional fixed operators to have as part of their arsenal?

• Outside of the traditional players, Cox made its wireless service official. What's your take on the cable guys getting into wireless and what are the challenges in terms of differentiation?

• There's an ongoing debate on whether LTE or WiMAX will be the road to next-gen wireless technology. What's your take on this — or will that really depend on the service provider and their own aspirations?

• No discussion about wireless is complete without sorting through the hype over femtocells. What's the real opportunity for these devices as you see it with the wireless carriers finally now entering the fray?

• Do you think we'll see more IP-based backhaul emerge this year to prevent stress on networks from the rapidly increasing use of data-centric devices?

While global telecom operators, systems integrators, and enterprises wrestle with Machine-to-Machine, they may struggle to contain a tide that has only just begun to rise. The power of supply chain automation, ubiquitous connectivity, and pervasive computing are so strong, we may already have traversed a threshold into a radically new paradigm in the communications industry, one in which waves of innovation, new economies of scale, and sheer business logic will prevail. While no crystal ball can show us the future of network evolution, we can revisit milestones of technological progress and shed light on the path ahead.
