Can C&W Re-Invent Itself?
The UK division of Cable & Wireless is one year into an ambitious recovery program. CEO, Jim Marsh, is confident that targets will be met
by Ken Wieland
Jim Marsh has got a lot on his plate. After all, he’s a key part of an executive team responsible for turning round the fortunes of a once mighty British institution — Cable & Wireless.
He also has an extreme dislike for BT. “I wake up every morning thinking about how I can spend less with them,” he says. “They don’t treat us very well and they don’t treat other customers very well either. Not many people like them.”
Marsh is CEO of Cable & Wireless’ UK business unit, which, confusingly, includes the running of an international network stretching across the US, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia; the whole division generates more than half of the Group’s revenue. The ‘International’ business unit, which represents Cable & Wireless’ operations as an incumbent abroad — primarily in the Caribbean — provides the remainder.
And Marsh is upbeat, despite the pressure of working in the beleaguered altnet sector, and claims that the UK division is in ‘recovery phase’.
