BT 21CN goes global

More than three years from the scheduled completion of its own twenty-first-century network (21CN), BT last month announced the launch of a new venture to advise other operators on their next-generation network (NGN) plans.

“We can now help other operators implement or accelerate their NGN programmes with the insights we’ve gained through 21CN over the last two years,” says Paul Reynolds, CEO of BT Wholesale.

The new business unit — dubbed 21C Global Venture — is described as a joint initiative between BT Global Services’ carrier services division, Global Telecom Markets (GTM) and BT’s Group Technology Office. According to Michael Heuer, the vice president of business development and consulting for GTM, it will work alongside GTM to deliver three main categories of consulting service: network and security; content and messaging; and enhanced voice.

“We’re moving from being a provider of capacity to being a provider of capability,” says Heuer.

Based on research conducted by Mercer Management Consulting, BT reckons the value of the addressable market for such ‘next-generation know-how’ could exceed €38 bn over the next five years. It is focusing its sales drive on Tier 2 and 3 players outside western Europe, and claims it has already had a ‘fantastic response’ from operators that attended its 21CN roundtable at ITU Telecom World in Hong Kong last December.

“In the Asia-Pacific region there are many carriers that want to bring their networks up to NGN, and there are maybe 500 major multinational enterprise customers that want the benefit from it,” says Matt Bros, CTO of BT Group. “That same applies to the Middle East and Africa.”
