Technical Perspective
Convergers, Converge Thyselves!
by Tom Nolle
It’s hard not to be a believer in convergence these days, what with big common carriers like BT launching billion-dollar contracts for IP infrastructure.
Getting everything onto a single network framework makes a lot of economic sense. Still, I have to wonder whether, given all this convergence value, providers couldn’t do a little better at converging their convergence efforts.
An equipment vendor recently told me that in working with a couple of large, global carriers, he worked with the head of the wireless project, the wireline guru and the expert in charge of converging (FMC) the two areas.
Inside the wireline group were three key people: one each for the optical, Ethernet, and IP technology areas. Wireless had people for radio and switching/IMS. The FMC group was divided into voice convergence, multimedia, presence management, and partner relationship management.
