SBCs On the Upswing
by Sean Buckley
Whether it’s acting as the traffic cop to ensure VoIP security or as the gateway in IMS for P-CSCF (proxy-call session control function),
one thing is clear: The session border control (SBC) market segment is growing. In fact, a recent report by Infonetics Research shows that
the SBC segment in carrier VoIP/IMS has grown 99 percent from Q105. Recently, Stéphane Téral, Infonetics’ directing analyst for service provider
next-gen voice & mobile core, sat down with Editor Sean Buckley to talk about the state of the SBC market.
Q. How is the SBC market shaping up?
A. The early VoIP and SBC market has been primarily driven by the development of broadband voice products, a market segment characterized by
small carrier contracts. As Tier 1 service providers begin to replace their existing voice networks with IP platforms, SBCs have become an
integral component.
SBCs are a necessary product for service delivery as they solve the problems associated with 1) the private/public address problem caused by the
limitations of IPv4 and the use of NAT as a solution, and 2) the fact that firewalls, used in most businesses, can block inbound VoIP calls and can’t
handle VoIP signaling.
